About Bran Castle
Bran Castle, a captivating medieval fortress, bears a storied history, with the castle’s construction being initiated by the residents of Brasov, following the “Privilege” of November 19, 1377, issued by King Louis I of Anjou. Its primary purpose was to oversee and control the Bran Pass, thus enhancing the defense system of Transylvania. Notably, between 1407 and 1419, the fortress found itself in the possession of Mircea the Elder (1386-1418), the ruler of the Romanian Country, and his son Mihail I (1418-1420). During the 18th century, the fortress gradually lost its strategic significance, transitioning into a hub for domain administration and the residence of the castellan.
In the aftermath of the 1848 revolution, the feudal domain of Bran was abolished. Subsequently, the castle, which remained within the domain of Brasov, was occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops in 1877. A pivotal moment in its history occurred on December 1, 1920, when the city of Brasov bestowed Bran Castle upon Queen Maria of Romania. This marked the castle’s transformation into a royal summer residence, adding a new chapter to its rich legacy. Following King Michael I’s abdication, the castle transitioned into the possession of the Romanian state and was repurposed into a museum of medieval history in 1956.
