Embarking on a journey along the Transalpina road is no small feat, as it traverses four counties and seems to reach the heavens as it winds through mountain ranges. Known as the King’s Road due to its reconstruction and inauguration by King Charles II in 1938, this road has witnessed thousands of years of history.
The entire royal family walked the road on its inaugural day. Today, the Transalpina stands as the highest road in the country, with its highest point located at the Urdele Pass, soaring to an altitude of 2145 meters. The road cuts through the Parang Mountains, spanning four counties: Valcea (housing the highest section in terms of altitude), Gorj, Sibiu, and Alba.
Tourist attractions on the Transalpina tour
When you find yourself on the Transalpina, you’ll likely want to do more than just admire the road’s spectacular views. The area offers several attractions worth exploring, including the Polovragi Cave, the Olteț Gorge, and various monasteries like Icoana and Polovragi.
The Olteț Gorge may only be 1.5 kilometers in length, but it leaves a lasting impression on every traveler. With their awe-inspiring vertical walls, this gorge captivate all who pass through. A stroll through the Olteț Gorge can make you feel small and insignificant in the face of nature’s grandeur. (It is advisable to undertake this walk on a sunny day or at least avoid rainy ones, due to the risk of falling rocks.) Climbing enthusiasts and passionate photographers frequently visit this area. The famous Polovragi Cave is also situated here, boasting underground galleries that extend over 9000 meters.
Nearby, the Polovragi Monastery stands in close proximity to the cave bearing the same name. This spiritual site has a history spanning over 500 years. Each year, on St. Elijah’s Day (July 20), the monastery hosts a “nedeie” celebration, attended by both locals from Gorj, Vâlcea, and Transylvania, creating a vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere.
